Utifrån antagandet att John Charles tjänstgjorde i Merchant Marines letar jag på nätet och finner siten usmm.org, där jag via en mailadress ställer frågan om hur jag kan finna besättningslistor inom Merchant Marines och specifikt fartyget Finland. Inom fem timmar kommer svaret.
"Sorry not sure who has records that far back. Try national archives since this may have been part of naval overseas transportarion service."
Jag tar rådet ad notam och finner siten archives.gov som har ett alldeles utmärkt sökbart arkiv. Med viss naturlighet finns inte allt historiskt material digitalierat och tillgängligt. Jag kommer så långt att jag hittar beskrivningen, identifieringen av vilka dokument som kan innehålla John Charles tjänstgöring. I ett mail till national Archive frågar jag hur jag kan gå vidare, och får ett mycket tillmötegående svar.
"This is in response to your question regarding a Merchant Marine who served aboard the USAT FINLAND / USS FINLAND during the first World War.
If you could give me the persons name and the years he served aboard the vessel I could check our muster rolls (crew list) for the ship as long as the time served was after April 1918. This is when the ship was commissioned as a US Navy vessels. If not, there are other ways to research his service as a merchant mariner."
Glad av ännu en tillmötesgående kontakt svarar jag omgående med namn och tidangivelser.
